Mataranka, Capital of the Never Never
Mataranka, NT is the location of the Jeannie Gunn novel (1902) and movie (1982), "We of the Never Never". Visit the Elsey Cemetery and the recreated Elsey Homestead to see how tough life was when the Territory was being colonised.
Today you can see the barra being fed, marvel at the glorious pink water lilies, float downstream at Bitter Springs in the beautifully coloured water, see termite mounds in all different shapes and sizes and see lots of flowering turkey bush alongside the highway in the dry.

UMBRAWARRA GORGE.
Umbrawarra Gorge is a hidden gem in the Top End of the Northern Territory. It has pink rocks alongside other delicious colours in the rock formations of the gorge. A creek meanders through the gorge for most of the dry season so there is an opportunity for a refreshing dip. A great place to visit for a short detour on the trip from Darwin to Katherine or a place to camp and explore the wonders of this magical place in more detail.
